Do I need to buy a violin?There are many choices when it comes to acquiring a violin. Many families choose to rent a violin , rather than purchse, since a young student will need several sizes as they grow. Violins may be purchased or rented from several local or out-of-town sources - check our Links page. You may want to attend a class or private lesson first so that one of our teachers may evaluate the student for correct violin size before renting. Violin shops, such as the Loft Violin Shop can also help you select the correct size violin for your child. Back to Top

Do I need to select a particular lesson time when I register?No. For violin group class, a student can attend any or all of the classes for their level during a week (you do not need to register for a particular one). Private lesson times and location are negotiated with the teacher once a student is registered and a teacher is assigned/selected. Back to Top
How young can/should I start my child in the program?This is dependent upon the maturity and attention span of your particular child. Most children 5 and up are ready for what the program requires. Many children between the ages of 3 and 5 are capable, as well, but it is a good idea to visit classes and speak with the administrator or another teacher to discuss in advance. Back to Top
What is a Parent Orientation class and do I need to enroll in one?The Parent Orientation class is our way of helping every family that enrolls in our school to have a greater chance for success with the Suzuki Method of instruction. Taught by several of our teachers, this 2-hour course includes suggested readings about the Suzuki Method, specific information about the way our school operates, and ways to help motivate your child and keep them excited about learning. One parent from each newly enrolled family must take the Parent Orientation class. Back to Top
Can my child take private lessons only, instead of enrolling in both private lessons and group classes?The success of the Suzuki Method of instruction is heavily dependent upon both private instruction and the group class experience. In order to provide the best music education possible, we require all students to enroll fully in the program, which includes both private lessons and group classes. The only exception to this is beginning students who may enroll in Keyboard or Kodaly classes without enrolling fully in the program. Back to Top
What is keyboard class, is it a piano instruction class?Learning to play a violin with proper intonation is a difficult skill for anyone, especially a young child. It is very important to have a good model for intonation. While listening daily to Suzuki recordings is an essential part of Suzuki violin instruction, we have found that students who first learn their pieces on the piano or keyboard find that it is much easier to learn them on the violin. Children who take the keyboard class will enjoy a variety of singing and musical activities while learning the correct method for fingering Suzuki pieces on their keyboards. The Keyboard class is conveniently scheduled during the same time that the Parent Orientation class is held. Back to Top

- Pronounced "Kodai", this is a fun musical education class that
involves singing, rhythm and movement, and pitch recognition for beginner/younger students.
Students take either a Kodaly or music reading class (depending upon their age
and skill level) in addition to violin group class and private lessons.
Kodaly classes are open to the general public and may be taken independently of
violin classes.
